Designer Spotlight: Robin Bond Interiors

Robin BondRobin Bond, CWTC, Green AP

Robin Bond is an award winning designer. Her work has been published and has achieved both national and international recognition. Her rooms have been described as ever evolving, edgy and elegant. A less-is-more approach where everything has its place is one of her trademarks. It is her philosophy that negative space holds equal weight to positive space with restraint being understood as a necessity for achieving the perfect balance within a room.

Robin is able to walk into a room and tell what is out of place or off balance. In her mind’s eye, she can visualize the potential of a room, drawing inspiration from anything beautiful, abstract or unusual. Each client’s home or commercial space calls out for something very unique. Robin has an innate ability to synthesize the desires of her clients, consider the architecture of the space, the existing furnishings and translate them into a harmonious and synergistic design.

Robin has been practicing interior design since 2003. Her training and experience include a Diploma in Interior Design from The Interior Design Institute, the Certified Window Treatment Consultant (CWTC) designation by the Window Coverings Association of America, and the Green AP designation by the Sustainable Furnishings Council.

In 2010, Robin founded the Texas Hill Country Chapter of the Interior Design Society, holding office as its President from 2010 to 2012. The Interior Design Society is a national organization that offers designers lifelong education and the opportunity to pursue a career in residential interior design. The focus and vision of the Texas Hill Country Chapter is giving back to the Austin community by donating room transformations for deserving charities such as Safe Place and the Central Texas Children’s Home.

Robin Bond

Robin Bond is a native Texan and has grown up around Austin with family living in Lake Travis, Dripping Springs, Buda, San Antonio and Austin. She has been married to Darren since 1998, is the proud mother of her son, Shelton, and shares a beautiful Ragdoll Cat with her family. Robin feels blessed to be able to practice what she lives, loves and breathes as a career. When not designing spaces Robin co-leads a weekly Bible Study and teaches Children’s Church through her local church, Hope in the City. She also volunteers with the Interior Design Society, exercises, cooks, reads, is a movie buff, bikes, has a passion for the water (especially Lake Travis), and most of all loves hanging out while building rich relationships with friends & family.

Legend Lighting had the privilege of working with Robin on a very special project in the 2012 HBA Parade of Homes. The Hill Country contemporary style home, built by Keith Durio, of JKD Builder, blended bold, modern lines and edgy finishes with a relaxed charm, which is a trademark of Robin’s designs.

Winter is the perfect time to think about Landscape Lighting

Landscape Lighting

It might come as a surprise, but winter is the perfect time to think about Landscape Lighting for your home! With shorter days, it gets dark before most people get home from work, so it is a great time to consider lighting up some the areas around your house.
One of the best reasons to add landscape lighting is for increased safety and security.

Path and step lights illuminate your traffic areas and a well-lit home helps to discourage any unwelcome visitors to your home at night.

Another great reason is to increase the use of your outdoor living spaces after dark. Our Texas weather allows us to enjoy the outdoors year round, so why not make your back yard a beautiful, well lit space to entertain? Additionally, landscape lighting will add beauty and value to your home. Just as your indoor lighting creates a mood inside your home, landscape lighting can also create a warm, inviting feel for the outdoor spaces surrounding your home. Let our experienced Legend Lighting sales associates assist you with the perfect landscape lighting plan for your home! We are happy to schedule evening consultations and demonstrate what can be achieved by placing a few landscape lighting fixtures in your flowerbeds and trees.

Here are a couple of informative videos from two of our landscape lighting manufacturers to help you get started!

In Memoriam: Larry Lee, Sr.
Dear Friends and Valued Customers,
It is with a very heavy heart that we write you to share some sad news. Yesterday morning one of our Legend Lighting family members, Larry Lee, Sr., passed away. Larry was known by many of you for his warm, friendly customer service that he provided as he called on custom homebuilders and assisted homeowners with lighting selections in our showroom.
As many of you know, Larry was with Legend Lighting from the inception of our new business, well before we ever opened our doors. Having previously owned and operated Texas Light Bulb, Larry brought of wealth of knowledge to our team and was a mentor and trusted advisor to our family. Larry represented both our business and our family with professionalism, loyalty, and respect. Our family is forever in gratitude to him for both the guidance he shared with us and the excellent customer service that he provided to many customers over the last three and half years.
Outside of work, Larry was a devoted father and grandfather, an avid golfer, and a proud Texas Longhorn fan. Larry’s sense of humor and kind heart touched us all, and it has been a privilege to know Larry both professionally and as a friend. Larry’s positive presence in our showroom is already sincerely missed.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced, but please check with Legend Lighting for more information as it is available.
Sincerely,
The Neal Family

Retro inspirations mixed with the clean lines of contemporary styling is definitely trending in 2012. This design style is ideal for the Austin buyer who is looking for funky chic or vintage but still trends toward modern design.

The Winton, pictured here from Hinkley Lighting,  is a retro-inspired design updated for today’s contemporary decors.  The heavy, rectangular tube construction has forged details and a unique fitted glass panel design. It is open at the top for relamping, lensed on the bottom and is available in chrome and brushed nickel.

The Latest Spin on Ceiling Fans: Direct Current Motors

If you’ve been shopping lately for ceiling fans, you may have noticed more and more options available featuring DC, or direct current, motors.  With much buzz in the residential lighting industry surrounding LED, it’s easy to overlook these technological marvels that can also make a significant impact on energy savings in today’s homes.  Here’s why.

The Midway Eco ceiling fan by Emerson Fans was one of the first DC ceiling fans on the market and is still one of the most energy efficient fans to be found, with an impressive 355 cfm/w.

If you’ve lived in Texas long, you may already be convinced that ceiling fans are a must for every room in your home.  All ceiling fans can help lower your electricity bills by making a room feel up to seven degrees cooler just from the cooling sensation of air blowing on the skin, allowing homeowners to set their thermostats several degrees higher while still achieving the same perceived comfort.

But ceiling fans featuring DC motors achieve this same goal while running on a fraction of the electricity used by traditional AC motors.  When comparing the efficiency of ceiling fans, the key metric to look at is airflow efficiency, which is measured in cubic feet per minute per watt (cfm/w).  This sounds like a mouthful, but essentially it means the amount of air a fan can move in one  minute using one watt of electricity.  This metric gives a uniform standard to measure efficiency of all ceiling fans regardless of their size, blade pitch or other attributes.

The Panama DC ceiling fan by Casablanca Fan Company

Let’s take a look at the Panama ceiling fan from Casablanca Fan Company to compare.  The original model featuring an AC motor uses 106 watts and has an airflow efficiency of about 50 cfm/w.  The Energy STAR version of this same fan, which also features an AC motor, uses 76 watts and moves about 79 cfm/w.  However, the DC motor version of this fan, released earlier this year, moves a mind boggling 235 cfm/w while consuming only 29.5 watts!  That’s almost five times more efficient than the original model!

You may be thinking that DC motors are not a new technology, and you’d be right.  Only in the last few years, however, have they become technologically sophisticated enough to be adapted for use in residential ceiling fans.  DC motors, at their simplest, use permanent, built-in magnets to attract and repel a rotor around an axis.  DC ceiling fans use a newer type of “brushless” DC motor that are even more efficient and are whisper-quiet, but they require more advanced electronics to control the speed.

The Monarch DC ceiling fan by Kichler Lighting creates a focal point for any large room with it's oversized 70 inch blade span.

So how does this affect your bottom line?  As with most energy saving products, you’ll spend a little more up front on these highly efficient marvels, but across the lifetime of the fan, you’ll come out ahead.  Add that to the savings from setting the thermostat a couple degrees higher, and DC motor fans could help make a nice dent in your energy costs on an annual basis.

Lighting Design Trends: Glass Imitates Nature

Glass blown pendants have taken a new twist, literally. Rather than the colorful, bright designs that trended through the last decade, we’re now seeing a lot of clear glass blown into extreme shapes intended to mimic designs that occur in nature.  These pendants by WAC Lighting are hand blown works of art inspired by ice, lava and the toxic yet beautiful puffer fish.

Resembling the frozen movement of melting icicles, the Italian Ice pendant sparkles like rays of sunlight on an ice sculpture.  The organic flow of color and variable texture from Lava creates an interesting and exciting look.  Fugu, the Japanese word for Pufferfish is a delicacy to enjoy, but lethal if not skillfully prepared. With hand pulled glass and embedded flecks of 24K gold, this unique pendant captures the likeness of this toxic sea creature.
